Customer service and how it relates to web design.
Well in my opinion customer service is THE most important aspect of business; without it customers will not come back to your site or clients will not use you for their business as well. This is different then any other job because you are representing yourself 24-7 online via your website instead of talking face to face with the customer so your message needs to be easy to read and follow, professional, and informative all at the same time. I have had to deal with websites in the past where I had a problem and they either took FOREVER to get back to me, they didn’t seem to care about my problem, or they had NO contact information or the email they provided was invalid… TALK ABOUT BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! I can guarantee you I did NOT go back to the site and I told EVERYONE I could about how bad it was. When you are trying to actually get customers in order to make money; this obviously can be a problem.
In my opinion one of the ways I personally have achieved personal success in the business field is by putting myself in the customers shoes. What would I want from them? What would I need to hear or see that would make me feel better about my purchase? In this age of corporate America downsizing and bean counting, I think the one major edge that the small business owner has is customer service plain and simple. That is the main weapon in your toolbox that a larger firm just can’t match or if they do it is not consistent and seems fake.
So customer service in web design really does make a HUGE difference and is super important. It is the uniqueness of the interface of the computer that makes it hard to achieve to some designers yet it can be the cornerstone of being successful or not. You can write fabulous code all day and be the most talented designer on the block but if you don’t have customer service then you got nothin!
